Cauliflower Ear Info

What is cauliflower ear? Cauliflower ear (subperichondrial hematoma) is a condition that is commonly seen in people who participate in contact sports such as brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling, boxing, and other martial arts.
It is a deformity of the ear caused by repeated trauma, resulting in the accumulation of blood and fluid between the skin and cartilage of the outer ear, making it appear lumpy and deformed.

How does cauliflower ear happen? When the ear receives significant impact such as a punch, hard blow or extreme pressure the blood vessels in the ear may rupture, causing bleeding and swelling. These blood vessels are very small and not designed to drain excess fluid away from the injured area, which causes an accumulation of blood and fluid.
If not treated quickly, this accumulation of fluid will harden and can create a permanent deformity which will require surgery to remove.

Does cauliflower ear go away? Unfortunately, cauliflower ear does not go away on its own, and requires prompt medical attention.
Left untreated, the deformity becomes permanent in about 1-2 weeks. If you have an injury that resulted in cauliflower ear, it’s important to see your healthcare provider immediately to avoid permanent issues.

What happens if you have cauliflower ear? If you start having symptoms of cauliflower ear, immediately seek medical care. The area will need to be drained of excess fluid, and then compressed to prevent fluid from re-entering the injured area.
